The Kingdom of heaven is a major theme in Mathew.Jesus refers to the kingdom of heaven more than fifty times in this book. This kingdom is wherever the King rules, and it came to earth with Christ the King(Mathew 3:2). It spreads as people welcome Jesus to reign in there lives. A careful comparison of Mathew and other gospels shows that the kingdom of heaven and the Kingdom of God are different names for the same Kingdom  (Mathew 8:11 and Luke 13:28-29).

Christ blesses eight aspects of character in His Kingdom. These eight BEATITUDES (blessings) are divided into two groups:the qualities and the expressions of Christian character.

" The Qualities of Christian Character"

The Poor in Spirit

The first quality of Chrsitian character is mentioned in Mathew 5:3."Blessed are the poor in spirit, for thiers is the kingdom of heaven." The poor in spirit are those who relize they are not the source of spiritual wealth. They depend on God to supply thier spritual needs. Jesus pronounced no blessing who brag and depend on thierselves.Rather, He blesses those who feel that without God they have little to offer. Christ's followers believe that without Him they can do nothing(John 15:4. The publican(tax collector) who would not even lift up his head when praying is an example of a person who is poor in spirit (Luke 18:13). He depended on God,not on self.Only people like him will share in the kingdom of heaven.

Those Who Mourn

The second quality of Christian character is found in Mathew 5:4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "happy and enriched are those who cry to God over there needs, thier sins, and the sins of others. This kind of godly sorrow leads to repentance and change(2 Corinthians 7:10).Woe unto those who only laugh through life ( Luke 6:25), for too much sunshine makes a desert.Sometimes we see better after our eyes have been washed with tears.James told sinners,"Grieve, mourn and wail.Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up"(James 4:9-10).Three biblical examples of this quality are Hannah(1samuel 1:1-20), the man who repented of sexual sin (1corinthians 2:5-8),and the woman who wept at the feet of Jesus (Luke 7:36-50).
